Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Retreat offers a unique wilderness experience at the foot of the Cederberg. Having claimed 1st position in the ‘Worth the Splurge’ category and 5th in the ‘Top 10 Hotels for Value Overall’ category (US Travel + Leisure March 2005), these are world class facilities that are now accessible to families with children of all ages, during the upcoming winter school holidays. The Family Affair packages are educational and enriching, and are specially designed for families wanting to bond and spend time together in nature, with the opportunity to learn more about the rich ancient Bushman culture. Located only 270km from Cape Town, Bushmans Kloof is a sanctuary for many indigenous plants, animals and birds, including the endangered Cape mountain zebra. A South African Natural Heritage site, daily activities include rock art walks to some of the more than 130 rock art sites that are found in the reserve as well as evening game drives with sunset drinks and snacks served in the reserve. Mom and dad will have ample free time to enjoy the 5-star facilities, ranging from indulging in invigorating spa treatments, to relaxing in the library or visiting the fascinating Bushmans Kloof Heritage Centre. Or they may want to join the children mountain biking, hiking through the reserve, or swimming in the crystal clear rock pools. Children will learn more about animals, plants and birds as well as the Bushmen - their rock art, hunting techniques and tracking of animals. Other child-friendly activities on offer include canoeing and fishing, and trying their hand at creating their own ‘rock art’, as well as having the option of camping out with experienced rangers. Early children’s supper will be served every day and afterwards rangers and child minders will entertain the kids with night-walks, game drives or video’s while parents take time out to enjoy leisurely gourmet dinners on their own. Adult dinner choices range from homemade comfort foods to gourmet gastronomic meals, to be enjoyed in various stunning settings and dining locations at the lodge. Although the Family Affair package activities are focused towards children between the ages of 6 and 12 years, older siblings are welcome too and babysitting services are available for younger children at a nominal fee.
