Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Retreat has been named the ‘Top Tourist Facility’ on the West Coast in the third annual West Coast Tourism Gala Awards that were announced in Citrusdal on Friday 5 September 2008. Important awards criteria included capturing a unique West Coast experience, benefits to the community, and the number of jobs and the extent of business generated for the West Coast.
Since its inception in 1996, Bushmans Kloof has consistently received world-wide recognition for the quality of the facilities and the professional standards of service, attracting guests from across South Africa and the globe. It was the winner of the coveted Relais & Chateaux Environment Trophy in 2007, and this year was listed among the ‘Top 101 Hotels in the World’ in the prestigious UK Tatler 2008 Travel Guide.
A conservation success story, the privately owned reserve and luxurious 5-star lodge offers a unique wilderness experience about 100km from Lamberts Bay. An SA Natural Heritage site, Bushmans Kloof is the proud custodian of more than 130 rock art sites dating back some 10 000 years. It also provides sanctuary to indigenous wildlife that includes 35 species of mammals, 150 species of birds, and more than 755 plant species which have been identified in the reserve.
Nelson Rodrigues, Bushmans Kloof lodge manager says that Bushmans Kloof is proud to receive this award that also showcases the rich, cultural historical aspect of tourism and conservation in the province. ‘As the premier wildlife experience in the Western Cape, Bushmans Kloof is a thriving wilderness area that has been recreated from a derelict farm. Today it nurtures priceless wildlife, protects the history and culture of the San, and secures the future of the unique botanical diversity of the region. At the same time, it plays an important role in supporting and involving the local community in tourism endeavours to ultimately create the Cederberg Biosphere Reserve.’
The West Coast is fast becoming one of the Western Cape’s most sought after tourist destinations. Stretching over 400km from South to North, the region and its people offer the visitor a surprising variety of travel experiences. These include the beautiful, and at times desolate, coastal region with its magnificent lagoon and numerous small fishing villages, the grain and wine farms of the Swartland and Sandveld; the citrus, rooibos and wines of the Olifants River Valley; the arid beauty of Namaqualand and the Knersvlakte, and the spectacular Groot Winterhoek Mountains, as well as the Cederberg.
